Underwater observation using snorkeling gear is an accepted technique for censusing fish populations in flowing waters. Several factors, including the behavior of the target fish species and attributes of the physical habitat, can bias underwater counts.

This paper de-scribes the use of underwater Cited by: By comparison, the South Fork of the Boise River below Anderson Ranch Dam has rainbow trout densities of almost five fish per meters squared. While relatively low compared to the South Fork's "blue-ribbon" waters, wild redband rainbow densities in the North Fork remained similar to previous surveys, and this population remains stable.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) encompasses just over 2, miles of cold and coolwater streams, of which an estimated 20% are large enough to support trout populations. Rainbow trout occupy % of these streams followed by brook trout which are found in % of the streams and brown trout which are found in % of the streams.

Since much of the water comes from runoff, the Kettle River is subject to low flows in late summer, especially in the upper reaches. Trout density (number fish ha–1), standing crop (kg ha–1), and as-sociated 95% confidence intervals were generated for trout ≤ mm TL and > mm TL by site according to Burnham’s maxi - mum likelihood estimate (Van Deventer and Platts ).

There can be strong currents, and the water is somewhat colder, so a wetsuit (preferably a 6 mm neoprene 2 piece, if it is September or October), is a must. U.S. Department of the Interior | U.S. Geological Survey Title: USGS Current Conditions for the Nation URL:.
